September 18 - Ohe'o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools)

Ohe'o GulchEven though it's part of Haleakala National Park, you cannot drive to Oheo Gulch from the summit; you have to continue on the Hana Highway 30 to 50 minutes beyond Hana town. Another thing, there are more than seven pools - about 24, actually - and all water in Hawaii is considered sacred.

Vistor's Center at Kipahulu Ranger Station. Staffed 9-5 daily. Restrooms available, but no drinking water. We had lunch at an available picnic table to the left of the sign with 4 middle-aged ladies from Texas escaping from their husbands:-) Waited out a short rain shower in the ranger station before the short walk to the pools.
View on hike to Oheo Gulch.

Looking toward ocean from lower-most pool?
Last little falls before cascading into the ocean.
Looking upstream. The kids were diving from perch into one of the pools.

We were warned to keep one eye on the water in the streams. The sky can be sunny near the coast, but flood water travels from above and water level can rise 4' in less than 10 minutes.

Obviously a great day for pool wading. The crowds are catching up to us.

The smooth volcanic rocks were difficult to walk on - but not impossible.

View from the brige leading to/from the pools. The crowd below is in spot in picture above. We are now heading back on the Road to Hana.
